Last weekend I raced up to Utah for the world's fastest trip ever. After a relaxing layover (do those two words even belong in the same sentence?), my plane landed at 4. I made it just in time to prep for the Utah Style Icon Awards hosted by Beauty Glam Now, and was on the first plane back to California the next morning at 8am. I should really travel more often, because I had this waiting for me at the airport.
The Style Icon Awards was a ton of fun and I was so honored to have been nominated. A huge congratulations to my favorite Abby Smith, who took home the crown. I couldn't be more thrilled for her. Also, if you are looking for the perfect person to attend a party with, she's your girl. I have the best time whenever I go anywhere with her. We ended the night with a hilarious bike taxi up to City Creek for dinner with dear friends and laughed till we cried into the wee morning hours.
Now onto the skirt. I have been holding onto this fabric since I was 8 months pregnant with Cash. I knew I had to leave the store with it, but had no intention of trying to make a pencil skirt while that large and in charge. Two years later, I finally had an excuse to cut it up, and it is everything I dreamed it would be. Even if you don't have anywhere to wear it right now, you might as well make one. You never know when an event requiring this kind of magic will call your name.

Materials:
- 1- 1//2 yards of sequin fabric (I purchased mine here and 3/4ths of a yard was barely enough)
- same amount of silky lining fabric in a similar shade
- invisible zipper
- pattern paper (optional)
Step 1:
Lay a pencil skirt that you already own (made from woven fabric. Make sure it isn't stretchy!) on top of your fabric or pattern paper and trace around leaving a 1/2" seam allowance on the top and sides, and a 1 1/2' s.a. on the bottom. Cut 2 out of your sequin fabric, and 2 out of your lining fabric. Cut off 5" of fabric from the bottom of your lining fabric. Serge/zigzag stitch all of your edges.
* I recommend always using pattern paper, and cutting a muslin first, especially with a fabric that doesn't have any stretch. This way you can make any adjustments you need before cutting into your real fabric.
Step 2:
Place sequin fabric right sides together and stitch up the sides with 1/2" seam allowance, leaving the top of the left side open the length of your zipper. Also, leave the left bottom side open 5 1/2 inches from the bottom for a slit. Press the seams open with a warm iron (make sure to test the fabric!)
Fold the two bottom open sides back 1/2" and stitch up each side individually to create the slit.
*Don't stitch across the bottom of the skirt yet! I forgot to take out those stitching lines, so please disregard that line.
Step 3:
Stitch up the sides of your lining wrong sides together with 1/2" s.a., leaving the top left side open for your zipper.
Step 4:
Slide your lining skirt right side out down into the sequin skirt wrong side out. Insert your invisible zipper to the lining and sequin sections at the same time. Stitch around the top of the waistband with 1/2" seam allowance.
Step 5:
Flip your skirt right side out so that the lining is now inside the skirt. Stitch around the top of the waistband as close to the edge as you can. This will keep the lining from moving up as you wear it. Press with a warm iron.
Hem the bottom of the sequin fabric with 1 1/2" s.a. and the lining fabric with a 1" s.a.
