I made this skirt a year ago, and it has become one of my most worn skirts ever.  The knit is comfy and stretchy, and the stripes make it so versatile.  I have dressed it up and down.  One good thing about the tutorial for this skirt is that you will have enough to make 2 skirts!  See what I mean in the tutorial below (click link to view tutorial).

Materials:
Step 1:
Using an existing pencil skirt as a pattern, cut out a front and back pencil skirt pattern in both the navy and white fabric.  Cut out 2 waistband sections measuring 2" wide.

Step 2: 
Create two separate pencil skirts by placing the navy skirt pieces r.s. together and stitching up the two sides with a serger or stretch stitch with a 1/4" s.a.  Do the same with your white skirt pieces.

Step 3:
Create your waistband by placing the two band pieces r.s. together and stitching up the sides.  Fold over so that the r.s. faces out.  With the waistband folded, it will now measure 1" wide.

Step 4:
Take both pencil skirts and cut straight lines across about 4" wide (might be more or less depending on the length of your skirt.  Just make sure they are even.  Leave an extra 1/2" longer at the bottom to allow for a hem.

Step 5:
Now take all of your skirt strips and put them together changing out the colors every other strip (see picture).  Pin them r.s. together and stitch 1/4" with a serger or a stretch stitch on your sewing maching (a normal stitch will not work!  It won't allow the stretch needed). You will have enough strips left over to make a second skirt if you would like! (the colored strips will just be opposite of your first one).  All you need to do is cut out a second waistband.

Step 6:
Attach the waistband by pinning all around the waist r.s together with 1/4" s.a. with serger or stretch stitch.

Step 7:  
Finish off the bottom of the skirt by hemming all around with 1/2' hem.  Stitch with a double hem to allow for stretch at the bottom.
