Hi everyone! I am slowly but surely entering back into the flow of everyday life (much thanks to my mom and MIL each spending a week helping out!). I have been doing lots of this...

I must say....birth/recovery/nursing/etc. is much easier the second time around. It's like your body switches into cruise control and just knows how to repair itself. Now I just need to learn how to juggle nursing with one hand while lifting a toddler onto the toilet with the other.

Well, my due date is fast approaching (the 30th...but I have a feeling he will come sooner), and I'm getting really excited to meet my new little bundle of joy. I must admit, even though I've been through it once before, the thought of birthing a human still makes me hyperventilate a little bit. I'm sure everything will be just fine, but it is really easy to psyche yourself out thinking of every little thing that could go wrong. But all in all, I am excited and ready.

A few weeks after having Bradley, I found out that one of my close girlfriends was pregnant. I immediately sat down and wrote out a list of everything I had learned/used since giving birth. I thought I had read enough books to kind of know what to expect, but there was still a lot that I didn't know. And once that baby is here, it is a lot like drinking from a fire hose. So I just compiled everything that I had found that worked for me, and a few details that I hadn't quite expected. I have since emailed this list to probably about 20 other girlfriends that told me they were expecting. Some of them have printed it out and checked off items to prep for becoming a new mommy. I read through it all last night and figured I'd share it. Keep in mind, this is all totally my opinion, so you can take it or leave it. You might find other things that work better for you. It's also a little lengthy.... but hopefully this will help out another mommy-to-be!

Delivery:
- Epidurals are your friend. GET ONE. It doesn't hurt. There is a small poke when they numb you with the 1st needle, then you don't feel a thing. The hard part is trying to stay still to get one while having contractions.

- Contractions are not going to kill you. They feel like major period cramps. But I would suggest the epidural asap when you get to the hospital (they usually make you wait an hour once you are there to make sure you are dilating before they let you have the epidural, so just keep that in mind)

- If you start to feel any contractions at all the closer you get to the actual birth, get the anesthesiologist to give you another shot of the epidural. You won't feel your legs for a few extra hours once he is born, but its totally worth it.

-Maybe this is TMI, but I had them put a mirror up while I was pushing a lot of the time. I thought that would make me vomit but it was actually kind of cool. But when it was time to actually give birth, I had them take it away cause I didn't want to see them do the episiotomy (which you won't feel AT ALL as long as you have the epidural).

-I'm not sure who you are going to have in the room with you, but I decided to have Garrett's sister stay and video tape it (my mom took pictures), and I was really glad I did. She filmed from up at my head...don't worry. You are so delirious and in a completely different world when the baby is born, so it was really cool to look back on it all and actually comprehend what was going on.

Recovery:
They will give you some AMAZING things at the hospital to help you heal. Here is what they give you (more or less) after giving birth:

They will stick you in a giganto diaper with these even bigger mesh panties to wear over it to keep them on. You will feel dead sexy. Then in the diaper, they gave me another diaper to put inside that was a baby diaper filled with ice. Then, each time I went to the bathroom, I would rinse off with a squirt bottle they give you, change the ice pack, and on top of the ice pack put Tucks pads and spray Dermoplast (see below)

You can get everything they give you at a drug store, so I recommend picking up the following before you deliver, so you will have extra on hand when you run out of what they send you home with:

Tucks Pads- These are white circle pads soaked in witch hazel. They are really soothing and help you heal faster.
Dermoplast- A cool soothing spray that kind of helps numb you so you aren't as sore.

I would also suggest having a ton of pads. I used 2 side by side for about 2 weeks until the bleeding tapered off, then went down to 1.
Take whatever constipation pills they give you religiously, and get some prune juice as well. And remember to refill the prescription. I forgot to, and that was bad news.

Baby Must-Have's: These are things I use everyday...no joke.

Mylicon Drops - HAVE THESE BEFORE YOU BRING THE BABY HOME. I'm not sure how your little one will be, but the 1st night we brought Bradley home he was super gassy. My milk hadn't come in yet, it was just the colostrum, and I think that is what made his tummy hurt. After trying to sooth a fussy baby for 12 hours, we finally called the hospital and they told us to give him Mylicon. Luckily I had some from a baby shower, so we gave him some and it helped his tummy immediately. The hospital said it is completley harmless. You give it to them ususally after they eat and can have it up to 12 times in one day (we usually only have to use it about 2 times in 1 day). I can't tell you what a lifesaver these have been and I am so glad we had them on hand.

Butt Paste - This stuff works wonders for diaper rash. I started off using desitin cream that was fine, but when he started to get a little tiny rash, I switched to butt paste and it cleared it up in 1 day. It doesn't smell the best, but it works wonders.

Boppy - The Boppy is my best friend. I have to have the Boppy, a burp cloth, and my water bottle with me every time I nurse.

Huggies diapers - I like these ones better than Luvs and Pampers. They are made better and I don't have as many blow outs with them.

Bouncy seat - Bradley still sleeps in either this or his car seat at night. It vibrates and he loves it. It is great cause you can start using it right when they are born, they can't be too little for it.

Swing- You can take it or leave it on the baby swing. We are borrowing one, and Bradley uses it every once in a while. He does like the rocking motion, but the bouncy seat would really be just fine and doesn't take up as much space.

Baby Bjorn - When I discovered this little wonder, I became 200% more productive. I started out with a sling cause I thought they were cuter, but he sweat to death in it, and I still felt like I had to hold onto him. With the Bjorn, both of my hands are free, but I still feel like I am holding my baby. I cook, clean, do my make up and hair, all with him in it. I felt paralyzed before I got it. It is a little pricey (about $80 at Target), but it is worth it. The cheaper brands don't give you as much back support. It will last you a long time too.

Bath tub - I got this one at Babies R Us and love it. It was hard to decide which one to get cause there are so many but they dont look that comfortable. This set gives you everything you need from tiny to a toddler. I lay him in the little hammock thing inside the bath and it makes it really easy and he loves it.

Dwell Studio Receiving Blankets - Register for these! We have used this set of 3 blankets over and over and over. They are the BEST for swaddling and are the perfect size.

Dreft and Oxiclean - This duo will get ANY stain out. Usually when I have a poopy outfit/blanket, etc (which is at least 3 times a day), I spray dreft on it, scrub it out a bit, and throw it into a sink with water and some oxi clean in it. By the end of the day, I have a handful of things, so I either rinse them out and throw them in the dryer, or in the dirty clothes hamper to wash later. This will help you from having to do 15 loads of laundry a day.

Lanolin Cream - This stuff is great after nursing. it helps to sooth your nipples. It is thick and sticky, which can be a pain, but it is nice. I started using it twice a day during my last trimester and I think it helped prepare me for nursing. If you get really sore, you can get a prescription for stuff called Newman's Ointment. This stuff is made by the Gods. It healed my soreness in 1 day. A nipple shield was also very helpful and gave me time to recover from the soreness and still allowed me to nurse. I would also highly suggest a breastfeeding class. I would have been lost without it.

Whew! That's a lot, but I'm glad I wrote it all down. I had forgotten about a lot of it. Do you have any newborn must-have's? I'd love to hear them!

I also wanted to let you know that I am officially going on maternity leave from my LeanneBarlow Etsy shop. I plan to be back up and running hopefully mid-march. I also have a few fun pieces I will be adding for Spring, as long as I can juggle that with being a mother of two!

I've kept my eye out for some good tribal fabric for a while now, and it was love at first sight when I spotted this print down at the fabric district. I only bought a yard of it, don't ask me why because it was only $2 a yard. I wish I had had more fabric to make it a little longer, but other than having to patch up a little section on the back that I cut wrong, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I wonder how it will look when I'm not 9 months pregnant...

I wanted to share some of the shots from our family/maternity photo shoot we did a while back for our Christmas cards. My talented sister in law shot them and I did the editing.

I found the fabric for my cardigan this summer at the fabric district for $2 a yard. It is super soft, almost like cashmere. I also found the intricate beaded trim there for about $4 a yard, and couldn't get this project out of my head till I had it completed.

I apologize for an entire week of silence last week. No baby...definitely still pregnant (2 more weeks to go!). I have been wrapped up in the world of potty training and the teeny tiny bit of free time I have had have been spent passed out on my bed. Potty training is tiring!

With that said, I wanted to pop in and show you my top pics for best dressed at the Golden Globes last night. You might see a little repetition in the colors...

I thought Jessica Alba looked amazing. Her skin was glowing and that dress was to die for. The color was perfect on her skin tone.

Nicole's dress was unbelievable. I loved the detailing and how perfectly if formed to her body.

Kate Beckinsale was the best dressed for me. I love her and think she is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. She looked gorgeous in that dress, and those earring! I died.

So yes, maybe all my top pics had pinkish/nudish dresses on, but I LOVED them. What were your favorites?

waddling through the district

I talked my SIL Rachel into driving down the the fabric district with me while we were home. She knows me well because she automatically offered to drive. I can manage the whole driving to LA thing just fine, I would just prefer to be the passenger so that I don't have to worry about getting sweat stains on my shirt or making left-hand turns.

I found 75% of the fabric that I needed for Bradley and Cash's room for a great price. I'm excited to get going on their bedding. It is weird that I haven't had to get anything really for baby Cash, since we have it all from Bradley. So making new bedding will really help with my nesting process.

I full blown waddled like a penguin up and down the streets of LA and couldn't care less. My back hurts like a mother and waddling is my only form of transportation.

On the way home Rach suggested that we stop by Roscoe's for some good 'ol fashioned chicken and waffles. And you can obviously see from the picture that they really do give you a plate of waffles, and a plate of fried chicken. SO random and SO good. We were the only white girls in the joint, which made the experience that much more entertaining.

We had my brother-in-laws family this year for Christmas. They have 2 little girls that are in love with American Girl dolls, so I decided to make matching outfits for them and their dolls.

The doll skirts were so little compared to the girls skirts.

*for those interested, an American Girl doll's waist is 12" and the length is 5". I just used these dimensions, adding 1/4" to the top of the skirt and length of the waistband for the seam allowance when I connected them. I also added an extra 1/4" to the length of the skirt for a teeny tiny hem.

For the waistbands, I just used the same method that I do in my Maxi Skirt, except I didn't make the band as wide because I didn't want it to fold down. I also made ties for the girls by sandwiching the ties in between the waistbands when I sewed them together. (make sure the ties are both pointing toward the center of the skirt when you sew them. That way when you flip the waistband right-side out, the ties will be pointing out in the right directions)

For the doll's skirts I just made mini bows and glued them to the front

It was so fun to see their reactions when they opened the gifts. One of these days I'll get a picture of them in their skirts with their dolls.

I also gave my mom and SIL Rachel cardigans.

We had a fantastic Christmas break complete with 78 degree California weather, our annual crab Christmas Eve dinner, and possibly a trip the the fabric district.... (more on that later)

Now it's back to real life. Which means my husband can't spend all day with us and actually has to go to school. boo.

I made the most delicious fudge I have ever had (no exaggeration). We got some a few years ago from my good friend Tina, and it is amazing.

Pinterest is full of the most adorable Christmas crafts. I, of course, have way too many projects pinned than I have time to complete, so this year I just picked one and went with it.

I love the look of this simply holly berry letter for the front door. It's simple and pretty. So one night I threw on The Buble's Christmas special and got to work.

I think the burlap garland is what makes it so cute, but Michaels was fresh out of it every time I checked. So this ribbon will have to work for now.

I have been thinking about getting lash extensions off and on and was thrilled when Amanda Romney contacted me and asked if I wanted to test drive a pair. My hesitation on getting them is that they would look crazy fake. I just wanted something a little more naturally looking, slightly longer than my normal lashes, with more of a cay-eye curl. Amanda did a fabulous job and I would highly recommend her if you are in the Utah area looking for someone to do your lashes.

Aside from the fact that I got to lay in an uber comfy chair with my feet propped up and eyes closed for a few hours (heaven), I love the fact that I don't have to worry about curling or putting mascara on my lashes in the morning! It cuts my make-up time almost in half. And I don't look completely homeless on my early morning runs to the grocery store in sweats and a messy bun.

I have pinned a handful of things to inspire me for redoing the boy's room. I am planning on just having them share a room, since they are both boys and will be close in age. I wanted to give it a little more grown up feel for Bradley, with a much more boyish feel. I sorted through all my decor and fabric ideas and came up with this storyboard to help me focus on what I want the end look to be.

I will be doing the crib bedding and Bradley's toddler bed in different fabrics because I didn't want them to be too matchy matchy. Let's see if I can pull this puppy off before the end of January!

I can't get enough of this little hand turkey that Bradley and I made at mommy school. I just might keep it up through Christmas.

I helped throw a little baby shower a few weekends ago for my friend Kayla. She is having her second, so we decided to go with a "sprinkled" theme. (Thank you Pinterest) The inspiration for the theme we found here. Did you know for your first baby it's called a "shower", and for your second it's called a "sprinkle"? So the theme was very fitting.

Anthro inspired caftan

I have been in love with this caftan from Anthropologie for a while now. It's no longer availalbe on their website, so I added it to my "Things to Sew" board on Pinterest.

I had kind of just forgotten about it, until I found some fabric that reminded me of it in LA. So I snatched up 5 yards. It was $2 per pound, and weighed next to nothing, so I'm pretty sure it literally cost me $2. I figured it would be great and flowy with my baby bump, and the colors were perfect for fall. And after some trial and error, and many threats to throw it in the trash, I finally completed it to my liking.

I made a row of tiny pleats along the top of the sleeves, and the empire waist. The back is just straight, but has the effect of being gathered once it is tied around the waist. Since the fabric is sheer, I made a black maxi skirt and wore it with a black top underneath the caftan.

* I must note that I did NOT make Bradley's Halloween costume this year. I just didn't have the energy, and 14 bucks at Old Navy sounded pretty dang good to me. So I grabbed his costume along with a sword, hat, hook, and parrot and called it good. Then I went through all my scraps of fabric and threw together our costumes. It took a grand total of 30 minutes and it was the best stress free Halloween ever.

SPOILER ALERT: I'm posting on the Project Runway season finale, so if you haven't watched it yet, stop reading and go watch your DVR!

I think Garrett was almost as excited as I was for the finale. I love PR and usually want to run into my sewing room after watching it and start creating. I was a little nervous about who the judges were going to pick in the end, because Josh wasn't my fav. I thought it would have been between Anya and Viktor for sure....so that was a little surprising. But they made their decision, and I am so happy for this little lady:

Yes her collection was pretty much all dresses, but they were gorgeous and flowy. And lets me honest...I die over a good dress/skirt. I especially loved this piece:

I have been planning on putting together a photo book of Bradley for the past 2 years of his life, and finally got around to it. It's just one of those things that sits on your to do list and always gets put on the back burner. I used mypublisher to make our wedding photo book and loved how it turned out. I got an email from them for 80% off the normal price (you read correctly...80%!) so I jumped on it. I am in love with how they turned out...

I was able to fill each book with 100 pages and it was only $40 per book! They usually have great prices normally, and are always doing specials. But this was the best discount I have seen yet and couldn't pass it up.

I would recommend using mypublisher to anyone. They turned out great and the program was really easy to work with. Now if I could just find a good place to print out blogs.....any suggestions?

P90X meals

So my husband had this great idea to start P90X together. Really realistic for a 5 month prego, I know. I think I made it through about 1.5 days of Tony driving me insane, then gave up and went back to bed. But one thing that I have gotten into is cooking using the P90X cookbook. I've always tried to be conscious about what I eat, but the first trimester was just a blur of Titos Tacos and Taco Bell 5 layer burritos. I knew once I was out of the crazy 1st trimester lack-of-self-control-phase I needed to eat a whole lot better. Mostly because I don't want to give birth to a 12 pound burrito.

So for the past few weeks I have followed the P90X meal guidelines as best as I could, and we have had some mighty delicious meals that would make good old Tony proud.

For breakfast we really love egg white omlets with mushrooms, tomatoes, green onions, and mozzarella

For lunch I usually do a whole wheat tortilla wrap with motzzerella, turkey, cucumbers, tomatoes, green onions, lettuce, and a drizzle of balsamic vinaigrette

I've also loved pita bread with shredded chicken, dill, tomatoes, and cucumbers

Dinners have been a little more labor intensive, but have been reeeeally good and full of flavor.

turkey (cut fresh from the deli) with gravy from scratch, green beans, strawberry salad, and peaches

wild rice, green beans, salad, sauteed mushroom, apples, and butternut squash soup

salmon with fresh dill sauce, wild rice, and strawberry salad

beef and broccoli stir fry, quinoa, strawberries, pumpernickel bread, and miso soup

Don't get me wrong, there have been some frozen pizzas sprinkled here and there, but for the most part we have done pretty well! It's a good thing I got this post in here before Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Because I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune then...

sewing basics:: the essentials

I have gotten a lot of emails asking for tips for a beginner sewer. I am no pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have a system down now of what I like to use when I sew, certain stitches for different types of fabrics, etc. So I'll tell you all my tips and tricks throughout a series of posts I'm going to call SEWING BASICS.

Today I'm going to cover the essentials: meaning, all of the tools that I use every single time I sew. Having the right types of tools will really help you with your sewing experience. Now I know that there are plenty more sewing tools out there than what I have listed, but here is what has worked for me.

*cue a chorus of angels singing*

The Sewing Machine
There are tons of different kinds in all sorts of price ranges, but I have loved every second with mine and would recommend it in a heartbeat. My mom gave it to me for my college graduation and it is one of the best gifts I have ever received.

My sewing machine is a Janome DC2007LE. My mom got it from Nuttall's in American Fork. It came with 4 free sewing lessons that I never used and have always regretted. I've read my manual from cover to cover, but it would have been nice to actually have someone walk me through my machine. But it is really user friendly.

*One tip that I didn't realize until a little over a year ago, is that you have an option to load your sewing thread horizontal (which I started off doing) or vertical. It comes with a separate attachment to switch to vertical and it has made a world of difference for me. When my thread was laying sideways it would always catch for some reason and drove me through the roof. I haven't had a problem since I switched to sewing with my thread sitting vertically.

It's really easy to change to different stitches, change the length of your zigzag, etc. The stitches I use most are 1 (straight stitch), 8 (basic zigzag), 13 (blind hem), and 16 (basic button hole). I have also used some of the decorative stitches on baby quilts and things like that and have really liked having those options.

Serger
Now this machine isn't essential for everyone, but I wouldn't be able to sew without it. I like all of my garments to be completely finished, and you can't get a professional look without one. I have use my mom's old Juki serger. It's old....but it runs like a dream. I know there are various serges that are really thin, or only use 3 threads, etc. I wish I knew how to do those! But the instruction manual is really old and I haven't been able to figure it out. But I have learned (through a series of stuck strings, strange noises, and swear words) how to thread this sucker. It is HARD.

Sergers are very temperamental, and if the balance is a little off, you could wind up with a snapped thread and have to figure out how to re-thread it. The first time it came unthread I took it down to The Cotton Shop and a nice lady there spent a good 30 minutes re-threading it for free. So you can always try that if you really get in a bind.

A Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, and Clear Cutting Edge Ruler
I went waaay too long without these tools! You WILL be cutting straight lines, and your time WILL be cut in half with this little trio. I got them all at Joanns. I would also highly recommend a suction gripper that sticks to your clear ruler. It makes it so much easier to hold the ruler in place as I cut.

a GOOD pair of Scissors
I emphasize the word "good" because I've used crappy scissors and they are no good. I invested in a pair of good quality Fiskars scissors because they were nice and heavy, sharp, and cheaper than Ginghers. Use your 40% off coupon for an even better deal.

Seam Ripper
When you make a sewing mistake....which you will, you will become fast frenemies with your seam ripper. I have spent many a night curled up on the couch in front of Project Runway with a botched skirt and my trusty seam ripper.

Pins
You may think I don't have an opinion on pins, but I do. I started out with the sorry little miniscule silver pins, but made the change to the long pins with colorful balls at the end and they are so much easier to hold, remove, and spot on the carpet so your toddler doesn't puncture his foot. . . . oh wait . . that last part happened yesterday. Worst mom in the world, right here.
I also found that they are the cheapest at Wal-Mart.

Seam Gauge
I use my seam gauge as much as I use my pins. I am constantly measuring and remeasuring hems, pleats, or seam allowances. It is a great little tool since you work with small measurements constantly.

Vinyl Tape Measure
I don't have an opinion on which one of these to get. Just get one. And you look really professional if you always work with it draped over your neck, like moi.

Tailor's Chalk
I like this chalk a lot more than a marking pencil. It shows up a lot easier and lasts forever. But I have been known to use highlighters and pens as marking tools just as often as the chalk.

Extra Bobbins
I always have extra bobbins on hand in case I need to change thread colors. I have wound the same bobbin with 2 different colors before because I was desperate, but it just makes things messy. I would recommend sticking with 1 color of thread per bobbin.
(make sure you check the packaging on your bobbins to see if it is compatible with your machine)

Extra Needles
There is nothing worse than breaking a needle and not being able to continue because you don't have any extra.

Last but not least, get a good storage system for all of your supplies to help you stay organized!

I used to just have a sewing box, but it became full and crowded quickly and I got sick of always digging through it to hunt things down. So I opted for this shoe rack. it gives me plenty of compartments, and it's all see through, so I never have to spend time trying to find something. Plus, it is all out of Bradley's reach, so I never have to worry about him getting into things.

Let me know if you have any other ideas for this series! Like I said before, I am no expert, but am happy to share things that I have picked up along the way.

I will try to do a sewing basics post once every couple weeks. If I try and say you will get this kind of a post every Friday I would fail miserably.

skinny tie

A while back I found a great pattern for a baby boy's skinny tie. I made a bunch for Bradley and have loved them. Now he is about growing out of them, so I'll need to tweak the pattern to make it a little bigger and a little longer. It's been so fun putting on these adorable little ties on him for church.

So I got this great pinstriped yellow knit at the fabric district and considered making another shirtdress. But then I just decided to make a skirt using the same technique, except I didn't attach it to a shirt. I wanted to have the option of pairing it with different tops.

I did the waistband of the skirt the same way I do the waistband for my maxi skirts. I added ties so that I could cinch it in as much (or as little) as I want. It's light, flowy, and most importantly.....stretchy.

With the dry winter months approaching, I am already needing to boost up my moisturizing routine at night. The other day I was so sick of getting such dry skin that I dabbed on some vitamin E oil around my eyes, cheeks, and corners of my nose before heading to bed. I totally noticed a difference in the morning, and have done the same thing every night since then. It works wonders for dry skin, helps in the anti-aging department, and it's only a few bucks at the grocery store. Just a little tidbit of info I thought I'd pass along. The Maxi

Remember that one time I used to sew clothes? Well cross country traveling mixed with nausea every night really put a damper on my desire to sew. But I started getting the itch a few weeks ago with all of my gorgeous new fabric. So I decided to ease back into my sewing machine with a simple, fabulous especially if you're pregnant, maxi skirt.

It's long and stretchy. At this point, I can't think of a better combo. I stocked up on knits in LA, so I have about 5 more that I want to make of this exact skirt. The best part is that I created the pattern and sewed the entire thing during 1 naptime! So it's a pretty basic skirt.

Lets get started. You will need:

2 yards of knit/stretchy fabric (more depending on your height/size. It takes quite a bit of fabric)
serger or elastic thread for your bobbin (I explain how to properly used it halfway through this post)
double needle for hemming (optional, but helps give you a great hem. More on that below)
2 spools of thread to match your fabric (2 if you have a double needle)

Step 1: Cut the skirt portion. Think of this as just 2 big triangles, in a sense. The width of the waist can be exactly your waist measurement (include 1/4" on each side for s.a.), or an inch or so less, depending on how snug you want it around your waist. Either way, it's stretchy fabric, and will be pretty forgivable. Mine was 15" (including s.a.) across on both front and back pieces.

The length of my skirt was 37 1/2" long (I added 1/4" s.a. to the top and 3/4" to the bottom of my desired finished length). Measure how long you want it to be first, then add on your seam allowances. I wouldn't make it much longer than you actually want it, because it's going to be a pain to have to cut off extra fabric at the end.

The bottom width of the skirt was 37" wide, so it had a nice big flare. Instead of having the bottom of my skirt go straight across, I gave it a slight curve. To get an even curve, fold your skirt in half long-way when cutting it, that way it is equal on both sides.

Step 2: Cut out your waistbands. I knew I wanted a really thick waistband, because I wanted it to fold over like a yoga pant. My waistbands were 15" wide and 10" long (keep in mind 1/4" s.a. on all sides). To visualize how thick the waistband will be, fold it in half width-wise. I wanted my waistband to be about 5", so that's why I needed a 10" piece.

Step 3: Lay your waistband pieces right sides together and stitch up the sides with 1/4" s.a. (meaning, the 10" long sides). You will want some stretch in this stitch, so I would use either a serger or a zigzag stitch. A straight stitch wouldn't give it any stretch when pulling it on, and the elastic thread would make it lay funny.

Iron your seams flat so that it will hang right when turned right-side out
(I'm a little bit of a natzi about things like this, but it makes for a very finished looking garment)

Step 4: Fold your waistband (now one big tube) in half all around, so that there is a fold on one end and the 2 salvage ends on the other side. Kind of hard to explain, but I hope the pictures help.

Step 5: With right-sides together, stitch up the sides of your skirt with 1/4" s.a.. A serger or a straight stitch work just fine. (don't use a zigzag stitch!)

Step 6: Now it's time to attach your waistband to the top of your skirt. Here is where your serger/elastic thread come into play. If you don't have a serger, the elastic thread will make it real stretchy when you pull it on, and should work just fine.

I hope the pictures make it easy to figure out, but you will need to slide the top of the skirt up through the waistband, with the salvage ends of the waistband pointing up. Match up all the side-seams and the salvage ends at the top. Notice how the folded side of the waistband is pointing down?

Now when you open it up (it should still be inside-out) this is what the seams should look like. Iron those suckers flat.

Flip your skirt right-side out. The waistband will now be able to be flipped down, just like a yoga pant. Now all you have left to do is hem!! Lots of pictures so far, I know, but it really is pretty simple.

Make sure your try your skirt on before hemming it. Then, pin and iron how short you want it hemmed, and try it on again just to be sure. I serged the bottom of my skirt before hemming it, and then used a 3/4" s.a. When hemming, I would suggest using a double needle for jersey fabric. I have done a blind hem in the past, which had worked just fine. However, I was ready to give the double needle try, and I LOVE it.

Here is my double needle in all it's glory. I used one with needles that were 4,0/80 apart (whatever that means). Double needles are only about $4, and only about $2 with your 40% off Joanns coupon. I don't know what took me so long to get it! It worked really well with jersey. When sewing with it, make sure to set your zigzag stitch to 0.

Most (if not all) sewing machines have 2 separate spots for thread. You will need to use your extra spool of thread now, and thread each spool of thread individually to keep the threads from tangling as you sew.

I forgot to get a second spool of thread and had to be a little ghetto-fabulous with how I finagled using my serger thread instead. It was nothing a little tube of teeth bleach couldn't fix.

Once it's done, whip that baby on and never take it off. As you can see, I made a navy blue one as well (that I still need to photograph). It got to the point where I had worn this coral skirt so many days in a row that even my husband was starting to get a little worried. I don't care though. It is SO comfortable. It's the kind of skirt that you can wear to church and take a 3 hour Sunday nap in.

So, it is still a bazillion degrees here in Utah, but I have been flipping through my 750 page Vogue September issue and am seeing new fall fashions pop up all over the blogs and it is getting me excited for cooler weather and changing leaves. fabric district...one last time

Call me crazy, but I made one more trip down to the LA Fabric District before heading back to Utah. Since I won't be back in California again till Christmas, I wanted to stock up as much as I could. Joann's just isn't going to cut it for me up here.

I wanted to show you a few great finds (all pics from my phone, sorry about the quality!), and tell you about a few new gem spots to hit up if you get a chance to head down there. I recapped my previous

trips to the district here and here, so check them out for some of the places I usually frequent.

This last trip, I just headed down by myself. Don't get me wrong, I love going with friends or my mom, but I made it a goal to maneuver around down there by myself, and now that I've done it, its a great feeling.

(crazy traffic, left-hand turns, one-way streets, and parking on the top of buildings terrify me)

I am a creature of habit, and park in the same place each time. That and it's the cheapest parking I've seen. If you are standing in front of Michael Levine, it is the parking structure to the very left of it, up the alley. It's usually around $5 to park, but gets cheaper the later in the day it gets.

So I usually start with the Michael Levine Loft right across the street (seen here) because it is the cheapest and that's where I get most of my fabric. That way I can haul it all back to my car first thing and don't have to bother with carrying it around.

Then I usually head right up that street about 7 or 8 blocks and work my way down, finishing with the Michael Levine main store (which has an amazing selection, but you can't bargain there like you can in the smaller stores).

One great find this trip was this store called Angel Textiles. It is on the Michael Levine side of the street, about 3 blocks up.

Walls and walls of gorgeous 60" bolts of the best apparel fabrics. I got a ton of stuff there and it was all $2 a yard!

My mom is redoing her living room, so I was on the lookout for some great home fabrics as well. Michael Levine has a fantastic home fabrics store, right next to The Loft. Here are a few pics I snapped:

Last but not least, my little bit of advice is to try some of the food the vendors are selling on the street. Sure, it's greasy, but it's also amaaaaazing. And when you are prego, nothing beats a bacon-wrapped hot dog. . . did I just write that? I still don't think I've worked that sucker off. But it was worth it.

Chicken Cordon Bleu...with a twist

Last week we had a lot of family over, so I decided to make my favorite Chicken Cordon Bleu recipe. I got this out of one of my Cuisine at Home magazines. They have the best recipes, and I recommend getting a subscription to them for sure. I haven't been disappointed by any recipes I have tried....and I have tried a lot.

So this is your classic Chicken Cordon Bleu, complete with fontina cheese and prosciutto ham. But, there is a secret ingredient added to them that makes them amazing...

You can see my toothpicks holding the chicken together. I used colored ones so they would be easier to spot when removing them at the end.

The red grapes add the best flavor!

Hungry?

Here's the recipe:

(serves 4...I doubled it)

Ingredients:
4 boneless chicken breasts (4-6 oz each)
2 thin slices prosciutto, halves crosswise
4 small slices fontina cheese
salt and pepper
1/4 C all purpose flour
2 T unsalted butter

Add:
1/4 C shallots, minced

Deglaze with; Add:
3/4 C dry white wine (I used white grape juice)
1.2 C chicken broth
1 T minced fresh thyme
3 T cold unsalted butter, cubed
1 C red grapes

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Cut a pocket into the wide end of the chicken breast. Wrap prosciutto around each piece of cheese and insert cheese packet into the pocket. Secure each pocket with a toothpick. Season with salt and pepper. Dredge chicken in flour, then saute in butter in a large oven-proof saute pan over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes. Flip the chicken and transfer pan to the oven. Roast for 8 minutes. Remove chicken from pan and keep warm.

Add shallots to the same pan and saute for 2 minutes over a medium-high heat.

De-glaze with wine, scraping up brown bits form the pan. Add broth and thyme, and simmer until reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low, add butter, and swirl until melted. Return chicken to pan to heat through. Add grapes and stir to coat with sauce. Remove toothpicks from chicken and serve with sauce.

As a side note - we are back in Provo! It's good to be home. But dang it's hot here! We had a fantastic summer, and now it's back to reality!

Design for Shabby Apple

My dream is to one day have my clothing manufactured and sold in stores. The thought of seeing a girl pass me on the streets wearing a piece that I designed would be amazing! (I would probably make a fool of myself and tackle her down telling her how much I think she is the bomb.com for wearing my clothes)

While I have a few things on the back-burner that would help me achieve this, I know that it might be a while before I have the time and resources to see this dream become a reality. So in the meantime, I am crossing my fingers that I might get a little taste of this with the help of Shabby Apple.

Solvang

Last weekend, the hubs and I left Bradley with Grammy and headed up north to Solvang for a little mini-babymoon. It was a quick trip but it was fun and relaxing. Just what we needed.

We lounged by the pool for hours on end. The pool is a much different experience when you aren't constantly chasing around a toddler.

We walked our little feet off all over cute Solvang. Then found this comfy little bench and took a cat nap....just because we could.

We ate at the most amazing Mediterranean restaurant for dinner. Everything was fresh and homegrown.

For breakfast we stuffed ourselves with Danish pancakes, sausage, and Belgian waffle. Top it off with a pound of orange fudge for the ride home and it made for one perfect getaway.

Have you guys heard of Chia seeds? My SIL introduced me to them and they are pretty amazing. They are those same seeds that you would smear all over those clay heads that grew leaves to look like hair. Except you eat them, you don't grow them.

Here are just a few of the health benefits from these little suckers:

- They fill you up. When they come in contact with water, pudding, juice, yogurt etc. they grow to 9x their size and they slow down the absorption of carbs to control the appetite.

- They are great for workouts. Prior to a run or athletic event which you need to hydrate, Chia Seeds in a bottle of water will help you hydrate. They will also help with protein to do the event without cramping up. Chia is good for the digestive system because it is a hydrophillic colloid.

- They are good at lowering your cholesterol. Chia seed supplies fiber in 2 forms: insoluble (won't dissolve in water) from its outer coat and soluble fiber (will dissolve in water) from its inner shell. Soluble fiber has been found helpful in lowering cholesterol and diabetes. Also the omega 3 and 6 has been shown to help.

So I have just been throwing a handful of some seeds into my green smoothies each morning, since the seeds themselves are easily digested.

Another amazing way to use Chia is to create a gel from them by adding water.

2 Cups Water

1/3 Cup Chia

-Let stand at least 10 mins. Stores for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.

This gel can be substituted for the oil in a recipe. My SIL made some brownies the other day and substituted the get for oil and they still tasted amazing. She also adds the gel to soups, pasta sauces, and anything else with that kind of consistency. I'm totally going to start doing this.

These are usually sold at most health food stores, like Good Earth. My SIL picked hers up from Utah. A big 5 lb bag cost her about $15

So when my mom and I went down to LA's fabric district, I had a full blown 3 page typed out list of everything I was looking for. That's the only way to do the district. You need to know what you are looking for beforehand because it is easy to get overwhelmed with so many options. I left that day with about 1/4th of what I needed, but I did get some amazing stuff.

I scored this gorgeous fabric for $2 a pound. It is super light, so I think I got about 5 yards for only around $3

This is exactly what I was looking for. I have something really pretty in mind with this stuff.

Coral jersey is always a necessity

I knew I wanted some gold sequined fabric, and I am just obsessed with this. Isn't it gorgeous?! The skirt I have in mind for this is definitely not maternity friendly. I have going to have a hard time not making the skirt until I've had the baby!

I ended up getting about 60 yards of this bad boy. Can you say cardigans? The amazing workers at Michael Levine hauled this across the street and all the way up to our car! Once I'm feeling a little better, and back in my own home, you might be seeing some new editions to my etsy shop.

exciting news...

I have some exciting news to share with you guys today...

I'm pregnant with baby #2! I am due the end of January and just hitting the end of my first trimester. We couldn't be more excited for this new little one to join our family of 3.

I've been suuuper nauseous so far with this pregnancy. I wasn't sick one day with Bradley, so I'm really not used feeling this crappy. It hits me usually around 4pm and gets progressively worse during the night. And night is usually when I sew/blog.

Hence - not a lot of blogging or sewing going on around here.

I'm hoping I start feeling more myself as I head into the second trimester, cause I have a LOT of things bouncing around in my mind that I want to sew. And I can't wait to show you some of the loot I picked up at the fabric district the other day! But it's 10:30pm and my stomach is churning, and my bed is calling my name, so that will have to wait for another day.

oh, and p.s. - I can't even tell you how many pictures from the scarf giveaway that went directly in the trash. I am showing way faster this time around and I'm in that middle, "is she prego or is that a gut" stage. It's just lovely.

Here are some shots of the Pinwheel Skirt in navy. I liked it so much for my client that I had to make one for myself. I used a "linen look" instead of a true linen, and I actually like it a lot better. It is a little more stiff, but that works for the skirt, and it hardly wrinkles.

Well, we survived a 5 hour plane ride with a toddler on our laps, and an 11 hour car ride and are getting settled into life in California for the next few months. Sorry about the lack of posts this week. It's been pretty crazy around here. And for all of those who have sent me emails in the last week or so, I should get back to you shortly! Man....moving sure takes it out of you!

Before heading back east for my husband's externship, I did a big custom order for a client. It was so much fun brainstorming ideas and fabrics with her and she was such a dream to work with. I sewed up a storm the 2 weeks before we left, but I got them completed! She has fantastic taste and it was really fun to see my work on someone else :)

This has taken much longer than I thought, but here are most of the pieces that I created for her:

I couldn't wait to show my client this skirt! She wanted a Pinwheel Skirt in a navy linen, and I can't get over how great it turned out. Luckily I could tell that it was going to be darling, and I ordered the same fabric and made the same skirt for me. Honestly, you can't go wrong with a classic navy.

Kelley Green linen full skirt. I did lot of wide box pleats to give it a nice fullness at the bottom.

This is a white linen version of the Pinwheel skirt I made for Sew News. I like that it is just simple with no trim, but the details of the skirt don't get lost.

This shirt-dress is made from a simple Gap body top and a super soft light blue knit. She wanted a slightly lower waistband than an empire waist, with pockets. It also hit a little below the knee and looked amazing on her. It is super easy and casual, but could be dressed up with some heals and a statement necklace no problem.

I made this shirt-dress out of a white top with ruched sleeves and a charcoal linen. I added ties to the pack and pockets. This is a little more formal than the previous shirt-dress and perfect for church. It looks even better on!

I also created this maxi skirt in a heather gray, with only the ruffles at the bottom. It was probably one of my favorite pieces. I finished it first and couldn't wait to get it to her, so I totally forgot about photographing it. I am working on one for myself, so I'll post some pictures once I get mine completed.

A few weekends ago we went with our friends Whitney and DJ to the Eastern Market on Capitol Hill in downtown DC. It is the longest operating farmers market in DC. They have tons of fresh produce, flowers, meat, art stands, and a huge flea market.

Whitney and I are both obsessed with crepes, and she raved about this crepe stand. We got a crepe with strawberries, cream, and nutella that was divine.

We left with a bag full of fresh peaches. I had every intention to make peach smoothies and a peach dessert, but I just couldn't bring myself to mix them with any other food. You can't beat the taste of a fresh peach. So we just ended up devouring them over the kitchen sink with juice dripping down our chins.

We just returned from a fun/crazy/walk till your blisters have blisters weekend in New York. It was fabulous and I can't get enough of that city. Who knows when our legs will recover.

Four years ago today I slipped into the most beautiful dress ever to marry the most amazing man ever. I'm off to celebrate our anniversary with the hubs.

I like to think of Madewell compared to J.Crew like Urban Outfitters is to Anthropologie. J.Crew owns Madewell, but Madewell has a slightly more earthy....urban vibe to it. I browsed through their store this weekend (I swear...the shopping in Utah is nothing compared to out here), and I found myself drooling over quite a few pieces.
