food coloring fireworks

Since the weather outside isn't the greatest, and I am paranoid about my newborn getting RSV in this winter weather, we have spent most of our time indoors.  I am always trying to think of fun activities we can do inside to keep us from going stir crazy.  I saw this "food coloring fireworks" idea on Pinterest and Bradley loved it.

All you need is a glass vase or pitcher, food coloring, oil, and water

Fill the vase mostly with water, then pour in the oil so it is about 1/2" - 1" thick when it rests on top of the water

Then let your little one drop in 1-2 drops of food coloring into the vase.  The food coloring will slowly sink through the oil, but once it hits the water....

It looks like a tiny firework exploding!

Start with the lighter colors first (yellow, red), then do the darker colors (blue, purple, green) to keep from making the water dark and muddy too soon.  And a little goes a long way.  This is a great simple activity to keep your little one entertained!
