Striped Cardigan

I decided to go completley out of my comfort zone and make a piece of clothing that wasn't a skirt.  I have always stayed away from making a shirt or any sort of top, simply because it looks really hard and complicated.

But I had a ton of this cute striped knit fabric that I had picked up from the fabric district a while ago and figured I would give it a try.  It didn't even take a full yard of fabric.

It worked!  I was thrilled that it actually turned out.

Basically I just took one of my favorite cardigans (I love how long it is), and traced each piece of it using muslin.

I didn't take too many pictures while I was making it, because I wasn't really planning on it turning out right.

I folded the fabric in half and made the stripes go vertical for the piece that goes around the neck and down the front.  I like how it breaks up the stripes a bit.
I had some gold buttons that I was originally planning on adding, but once I got this far, I thought that anything else might be a little much.  I like the simplicity of it.

I couldn't believe how easy it was!  After I created the pattern out of muslin, it took me about 2 hours to cut, pin, and sew it all together.

Now I can't stop thinking of all the different cardigans I want to make.  Because a girl can never have too many cardigans.

  1. I love this! Oh my gosh, it turned out perfectly!! You have inspired me - I have a two-yard cut of comfy fabric at home that I bought because I thought it would make a fab cardigan...but I never touched it, because I fear making something "me" sized (when I usually only make kid stuff). But yours is so awesome, I think I'm going to try. Wish me luck!!

  8. That's great! Do you use a special foot on your machine for knits, or just change the needle?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Joy - I used a normal needle, but I did use wooly nylon thread in the bobbin. That helps give it some stretch.

  10. Great job! It turned out perfect! I have a hard time sewing knits. I haven't tried the wooly nylon thread. Will definitely give that a try!

  11. You should post a tutorial! I love this cardigan! Also, you should find a way to post your pattern pieces. It's always too hard for me to trace a piece of clothing I already own.

  26. I'm fairly new to sewing {especially garments} and am trying to figure out how you traced the pieces. Did you seam rip the entire cardigan apart or just trace and add a little for the seam?

I love the fabric you chose {yay pink & yay stripes!} and also that you changed the direction of the stripes. I'd love to try one of these! :)

  38. Alright, Miss. Now you need some better pictures! Because THIS girl can't get enough cardigans. Really, on our tight budget, I can't. But I can sure howdy learn to MAKE them! I was telling the lady at the fabric store JUST today how much I'd love to make something with this navy and white striped knit fabric OTHER than an accessory... all while lamenting how very un-seamstress-y I am. This gives me hope! :) Please make another one with lots of steps! :)

  40. I LOVE this cardigan!

I've always wanted to make my own clothes. My mum used to design and create all my clothes for me when I was a little girl but I've never actually tried to sew something myself (apart from the felt cushion I made in my design-tech class at secondary school which, to be honest, didn't turn out so well!)

Your blog has inspired me to pull out mum's old sewing machine and give sewing a try. What would you suggest I start out with?

    Thanks for the inspiration!
