crib bedding 101

I have had a lot of requests for my bedding measurements, so without further ado, here are the measurements I used for my crib bedding.  The measurements should work just fine for most cribs, but just to be safe, make sure to measure your own crib to double check that the measurements will work for yours.

First things first- Here are the amounts of fabric I purchased for each section of the bedding:

Bumper:

4.6 yards of fabric total (168" L X 45" W)

If you want to do 1 print on the outside and a different print on the inside, you will need 2 1/3 yard of each fabric (84").

Ties for the Bumper:

I did 12 ties total.  You can make yours thicker or thinner, whatever you prefer.  For the size that I have, you will need a total of 1 yard (you will have a little left over).

Piping:
I couldn't find the piping color that I wanted, but they do sell pre-made piping in a few different colors.  If you can, try to find piping that is already pre-made.  It makes things a lot easier.

You will need 4 1/2 yards of piping
(If you are making your own piping, you only need about 1 yard of fabric to cover the piping and 4 1/2 yards of uncovered piping.)

Dust Ruffle:

1 1/2 yards of white fabric for the top part that lays under the mattress.  This can be the very inexpensive white muslin since it will not show.

2 1/2 yards of fabric for the dust ruffle.

*note:  You will need 4 of the long sides and 4 of the short sides cut total.  I specified that you will need 2 of each in the directions above assuming that a different fabric would be used for the front and back of the bumper pads.

The tie measurements above with give you ties that are 1 1/2" wide.  Once you have your ties completed, fold them in half, and spread the ends to form a V.  Then, place them on the right-side of the bumper pad that you want to be facing out, like so:
(since the bars on cribs are not all spaced out the same, you will need to measure and mark where you want your ties to be so that they will match up with the bars on your crib)

If you are using piping, next you will place the piping along the top of the bumper, with the selvage edges matching up with the selvage edges of the bumper:
(make sure you use a zipper food when attaching the side with the piping so that you stitch as close to the piping as possible)

Make sure to add the ties to the bottom as well.  Before laying what will be the backside of the bumper piece on top of this front bumper piece (right-sides together), this is what it should look like:

If you don't have bumpers that you are going to cover, you can just make your own.  I purchased a large foam pad from Joann's that was 23" X 61" and about 2 1/2" thick.  Then I cut 2 strips that were 50 1/2 " X 12" and 2 that were 23" X 12" so that they would fit snugly along the sides of the crib.

Next is the crib skirt.  This is really simple, only a few straight lines.  Just remember that you only need one long side cut for the front of the crib skirt, since nobody will see the back of the crib.

And there you go!  For some, it might be worth it to just purchase the bedding of your dreams for $300 since this is a pretty time consuming project.  But if your are a fairly intermediate sewer, make your own!  It is so satisfying to have exactly the bedding with the fabrics and colors that you have been dreaming about.

  3. Thanks for this. I'm curious what you do to adjust the dust ruffle when you lower the mattress? Do you just hem it up shorter? Or let it pool? Thanks!

  9. Also do you remember if the foam was super expensive? I'm looking at JoAnns and the foam is almost $80. Am I looking at the right stuff?

  11. Just so you know, it's not possible to cut 2 strips that are 50 1/2 " X 12" and 2 that are 23" X 12" from a 23" x 61" piece of foam, as the tutorial says. The foam would need to be at least 74.5" long for this to work. I just realized this after buying my foam :/ Thanks for the tutorial, though! I really wanted foam, not batting, bumpers and it's super hard to find a tutorial on it.

    1. Thanks Kay! I made it so long ago I forgot that for one of the bumper ends I had to cut a little strip extra to fill up the bumper to be long enough.

  12. Ok, so here I am waiting to make my bumper, etc. Go to Joann's yesterday. No WHITE foam other than the 1 inch thick stuff. They certainly have the bumper packages. Looking online, I see foam, but it is ridiculously priced. Was the foam you purchased over $100, if you don't mind my asking? Thanks!!

    1. It looks like home depot has foam smooch pads on sale that would work. My foam pad was 2" wide and I used a coupon so I think mine ended up being somewhere between $20 and $30.

  13. Home depot has foam camping pads right now that you could make work for only $20 dollars. you will probably need 2 though. Hi Leanne! :) I am using your tutorial to make my bedding. Keep up the good work!! one stupid question though. Do you sew all 4 sides of the bumper together after you make them? I am confused on that part.

    1. Hey Dyanna! No I didn't sew them together, I added Velcro to one side on each of the four bumper parts so that you can remove the fabric for washing. And the four pieces are just separate in the crib but meet up at the corners. Good luck and congrats!

    2. Can you elaborate more on this step? It's a pretty vital step that's missing, and I'm not sure that I'd just figure it out without some coaching.

    3. I know that this is an older post, but I am making baby bedding for two babies. I buy the baby bumper kits of farics.com. They are 19 and some change. It comes in 6 sections, but I use E6000 and glue two together for the sides. If you buy over 35 dollars, the shipping is free. I personally like these. They aren't too thick, and I do the bumper covers with zippers to be able to wash them. Love your site!

  16. How would i adjust this if I am using 1" foam? I was trying to figure out how much extra you included with your seam allowances and then needing enough to go around the thick part of the foam.. if you are cutting 12" strips, and a seam allowance of 5/8" would 13 1/2" be enough to fit around the foam? Sorry for asking a silly question...

  17. My husband got a little ahead of himself and thought he was doing something nice for me, which he was, but he bought me Jersey knit instead of cotton. Will this make a difference?

  18. Dear Leanne,

Thank you for posting a very thorough and complete description about how to make your own crib bedding. Not only are the measurements with diagram helpful, but you included detailed pictures too! This will really help me along with my project. I am making the bedding for my twin granddaughters that are coming in 6 weeks! Their expectant mother (my daughter) wanted something unique and personal, and saw an idea on Pinterest of mixing up bright patterns and putting it into a nursery with gray walls. I'm a very busy grandma!

I do have a question about what I should do regarding making matching comforters for the bedding. I know that often the comforter ends up being draped over the side of the crib, but I'd like to have them with the babies' names monogrammed in the center of each quilt. What size would you make them? I've searched and found 36" x 60" measurements (finished size), but when I bought quilt batting for cribs, it measured at 45" x 60". Is there a difference between quilts and comforters? If you have made a matching comforter/quilt, what size did you use or would you recommend?

Thank you so much for putting this blog together. I am looking at it while I put my bumpers together!

    Sincerely,

    Cyndi

  20. Any chance you can elaborate on the ties? I've read and re-read dozens of times and I just can't figure out how to close them up after you flip them right side out. Thanks

  21. The dust ruffle doesn't get finished edges on the sides of each panel?????

    ReplyDelete
  22. This might be silly, but I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. Do I sew the two halves of the bumper fabric together BEFORE I add the foam and the stuff it? Or do I place fabric, foam, fabric and then sew it all together? I'm assuming I stuff it right?
