dolman + me = love

I have been craving some dolman sleeved tops that are loose and flowy.  So I headed down to my local Forever 21 to stock up on a few.  I would see some great potentials on the rack calling my name, but every time I picked one up it was like, "psych!  I'm cropped and about 10" too short!"  Fabulous.  I got so sick of searching for the perfect fitting top, that I decided to just make my own.

I just created a pattern using a top that had the boat neck that I was looking for, as well as the looseness and length.

I had to use the good ol "trial and error" a few times before I got the sleeves right.  My first attempt at the sleeves would have fit Bradley's arms perfectly.  But the best part about this sucker is that the sleeves are just an extension of the shirt....no cutting armholes or sewing in sleeves!  I figured since I would eventually have to wash this top I would make a few more.  Pics to come....

So......I joined the Twitter world.  Follow me here ( @LeanneBarlow_).  Don't judge me because I pretty much only follow Kim Kardashian and Ryan Seacrest.  Or the fact that I still have a hard time deciphering tweets.  And while I'm at it, does anyone know how to post a condensed version of a url when tweeting from a computer?

    Beautiful! I love it! Boat neck is like my favorite neck line. I'm pregnant and hating all my shirts. Maternity are too long and stupid, regular are too short and stupid. Maybe I need me one of these! Brilliant!

    Beautiful shirts! Also, I think Twitter will automatically shorten a url when typed with at least the www. in front when using the website to tweet.

      I use muslin. It's more durable than paper.

      Heather - I buy all my knits in LA at the fabric district. But fabric.com has some great ones along with one of my sponsors, The Fabric Fairy has some great knits too. Good luck!

    You look great, I love the bright lips. I sew a bit but have not had much luck with knits as I can never get the hems to sit right without curling out. Any tips? Cheers, Nina

      Thanks Nina! Hemming knits can be a little tricky. I always serge my hems first, because that makes it a little easier to work with when folding under. And I use a double needle. That really helps with making your hem look professional and it hangs nicely. Plus the double needle allows for stretch too. Hope this helps!

    I love this. I made the maxi skirt using your tutorial and it turned out great! I've since made two more. :) I haven't been able to find a jersey that I'm thrilled with, though. I've only purchased a couple types from fabric.com. The quality is great, but it just wasn't the weight I had hoped for. The second jersey I purchased it okay, but isn't available in a stripe...at least, not that I could find. Where can I find the jersey you're using?
